Groton to resurface part of Briar Hill Road

Groton — The northern part of Briar Hill Road, described by one resident as "alligator cracking pieces of asphalt" has been added to the town's list of roads for resurfacing this calendar year.

Briar Hill Road is a dead-end road that intersects Gungywamp Road; the lower section of Briar Hill serves Charles Barnum Elementary School, but is adequate to handle the traffic, according to a memo by Gary Schneider, director of public works.

The northern section of Briar Hill served an area that largely was undeveloped when the town determined which roads needed paving.

Since that decision, Schneider said several homes have been built, and last winter nearly broke the road apart.

The Town Council voted unanimously this week to pave the northern portion of Briar Hill Road this calendar year, at a cost of $56,000 excluding labor.

Two roads planned for 2016 will not be addressed: North Stonington Road, which needs bridge design work first; and Pumpkin Hill Road, which needs drainage work first.

The council also previously added roads for paving in the Watrous Subdivision.
