Ledyard, Norwich place in Quahog Bowl

Groton — E.O. Smith High School in Storrs will be competing against 24 regional winners in the 19th annual National Ocean Sciences Bowl after winning the 2016 Quahog Bowl at the University of Connecticut's Avery Point campus. Ledyard High School placed second in the Quahog Bowl, while Norwich Free Academy placed fourth and the Marine Science Magnet High School in Groton won the Team Challenge Question award.

The Quahog Bowl tests students' knowledge of ocean science disciplines through buzzer-style, multiple-choice questions and open-ended, team-challenge questions about ocean science.

Winning teams were presented with trophies for first and second place, and a number of donated prizes including scholarships, summer camp, books, apparel, passes to Mystic Seaport, and more. All teams received T-shirts and donated items. About 200 people attended the all-day event.

The National Ocean Sciences bowl will take place from April 21-24 in Morehead City, N.C. The theme this year is "Our Changing Ocean: Science for Strong Coastal Communities." Around 300 high schools are expected to participate.
