The Day recognized by state press association
Wallingford — The Day won 15 first-place awards in the annual Connecticut Society of Professional Journalists contest.
The awards were presented Thursday night at the group's annual meeting at the Memories at the Tradition.
Ann Baldelli was first in education reporting with a profile of New London Superintendent Manny Rivera, first in feature writing for a story on double amputee Wil Kornegay and, along with Colin A. Young, first in government reporting for "Kelo v. New London: 10 years later."
The Day's series on the dangers of Interstate 95 placed first in investigative reporting. Tess Townsend, Lisa McGinley, Izaskun Larrañeta, Carlos Virgen, Greg Smith and Joe Ruggeri produced the series.
Larrañeta was also first in Religion Reporting for her coverage of Pope Francis' visit to the United States. Dana Jensen's photography of the visit placed first in Photo Essay.
Julia Bergman was first in business reporting with a story on Electric Boat gearing up for hiring. Karen Florin was first in courts and crime reporting for her series on women in law enforcement.
David Collins placed first with a column on whether Sen. Andrew Maynard was healthy enough to serve. Marisa Nadolny was first in leisure reporting with "18th century herbal traditions remain fresh."
Joe Turco placed first in the headline writing category and Jill Blanchette in the infographic design category for "Along the Pawcatuck."
Maria Reagan was first and third in non-page 1 layout for a Daybreak section front and a food page. Jill Blanchette was second for a business page.
The Day swept the Video Storytelling category with Peter Huoppi first with a video on Marissa Walker of Waterford and Shelly Yang second and third with videos on Coast Guard Academy swabs and runner Becky McCoy.
