New London — Police and fire personnel responded to several crashes Tuesday afternoon and evening, which saw traffic traffic snarl at multiple locations on Interstate 95 and Route 32.

A crash involving four motocyclists on Route 32 sent three to the hospital, one with a broken leg, near Deshon Street and the Coast Guard Academy about 7:40 p.m.

Accounts conflicted over who was responsible for the collision. Some witnesses reported that a motorcyclist rear-ended a vehicle heading northbound, while others said the vehicle was responsible.

Police at the scene said one of the motorcycle operators may have been driving erratically.

At the scene, the handlebars of one bike could be seen bent backwards against the gas tank.

I-95 saw three crashes Tuesday afternoon, including a single vehicle that had rolled over on the northbound side of the Gold Star Memorial Bridge about 3:30 p.m., causing minor injuries and leading State Police Troop E to close multiple lanes at rush hour.

About 5:40 p.m. a pickup truck towing a camper rolled over on I-95 northbound between Exits 91 and 92. State police said that crash was being investigated.

Traffic at the scene was being diverted and drivers were advised to avoid the area, though vehicles were backed up on the highway for some time after the accident.

And later, about 8:15 p.m., around the same exits on the southbound side of I-95, a vehicle crashed into a guardrail, causing minor injuries.

New London Deputy Police Chief Peter Reichard said that his department had had "several minor accidents reported," which included a two-vehicle collision at the corner of Williams and Grove streets near Hodges Square, throughout the day Tuesday.

No major injuries were reported in those incidents.

Robert Lee, owner of Lee's Oriental Market, said Tuesday that people frequently drive at high speeds through the area of Hodges Square.

No further information about the accidents was available late Tuesday night.
