An Old Lyme man recently biked across the United Stated and raised more than $40,000 to support youth cycling programs.

Mark Johnston, a CT Cycling Advancement Program board member, finished the 39-day journey — which crossed through 13 states - on May 19.

CCAP cyclists met Johnston in Middletown to complete the final leg of his journey back home to Old Lyme.

Johnston, 58, was the president of Van Wagner Communications until its sale in October of 2014 and had previously worked as a banker. He serves on the boards of Charity Navigator and Harlem Academy and has degrees from Princeton University and the Fordham University School of Law.

He and his wife, Sarah, have four grown children and one grandson.

“My fondest hope was met upon arrival when I discovered that my wife Sarah did not change the locks before I got home,” said Johnson. “This experience reiterated to me that pedaling a bike is absolutely the best was to see the country.”

CCAP Executive Director David Hoyle said Johnston told CCAP that the journey “fulfilled his dream of more than 30 years.”

“He is as inspired as ever about the important work we do here in Connecticut to create opportunities for young people to be a part of youth cycling programs and leagues,” said Hoyle. “The amazing and generous support Mark raised through his ride provides CCAP funding to start four or five new middle and high school cycling programs.”

Johnston was supported by two drivers during his cross-country ride: Dan Izzo and Joshua Gallo.
