Mystic VFW post to honor Virgil Huntley on his 100th birthday

Mystic — The Hugo Simonelli Veterans of Foreign Wars Post 3263 will hold a 100th birthday celebration for Virgil Huntley, one of the post’s founding members and a World War II veteran of the Pacific, at 1 p.m. Saturday at the post home, 60 Stonington Road.

The post also will award him his 70-year membership pin and patch, something that few members ever receive.

State and local politicians are expected to attend the ceremony as well as state, district and local VFW officers.

Huntley, a former longtime employee of the Mystic Post Office, enlisted in the Army after the Japanese attack on Pearl Harbor in 1941. He served throughout the Pacific until 1945 and was awarded several medals for his service in the Philippines, New Zealand, French New Caledonia, New Guinea and Guadalcanal.

He was honored at the Mystic Memorial Day parade this year, riding in the lead car with a banner announcing his 100th birthday.
