Two of the region’s Indian tribes are hosting public celebrations over the next two weekends, starting with the Mohegan Tribe’s annual Wigwam Festival, which will be held from 10 a.m. to 7 p.m. Saturday and Sunday at Fort Shantok in Uncasville.

The Mashantucket Pequot Tribe’s 25th annual Schemitzun, the Feast of Green Corn and Dance powwow, is scheduled to take place the following weekend, Aug. 27-28.

The Mohegan festival will feature Native-American crafts and food and dance competitions. Grand Entry of tribal members in full regalia will take place at noon both days. Admission is free.

Shuttles will operate from Mohegan Sun’s bus lobby and Thamesview Garage, with the last shuttle leaving the festival site at 7 p.m. each day. There will be no on-site parking. For more information, call 1-800-MOHEGAN.

The Mashantuckets’ powwow will begin at 10 a.m. Saturday, Aug. 27, on the tribe’s Mashantucket reservation, and will feature traditional and contemporary dance exhibitions, live music and craft vendors. Mashantucket Pequot Museum and Research Center members will be admitted free.

Admission for other adults is $8, and $6 for children, ages 6-10, and seniors 65 and older.

A re-enactment of a 17th century Eastern Woodland Village will showcase a variety of traditional cultural practices, including fire-pit cooking demonstrations, wampum-making, loom beadwork and basketry.

The powwow’s hours are from 10 a.m. to 10 p.m. Aug. 27 and from 10 a.m. to 6 p.m. Aug. 28. Grand Entry is scheduled at noon and 6 p.m. the first day and at noon the second day.

Parking will be available at the museum, Foxwoods Resort Casino, The Fox Tower and Two Trees Inn, with complimentary shuttle service to and from the powwow site. On-site parking will be provided for staff and registered participants only.
