Deadline approaching for veterans to apply for property tax exemptions
Groton — The assessor’s office is reminding residents that veteran exemptions are available for property taxes, and the last day to file for such an exemption for the October 2016 grand list is Sept. 30.
To receive an exemption, veterans must be a resident of Groton and have served 90 or more cumulative days unless the war lasted less than 90 days, according to a news release by the assessor’s office. An original or certified copy of an honorable discharge must be recorded with the town clerk’s office.
Widows or widowers also may qualify for exemptions.
Disabled veterans that have established their eligibility for exemption are no longer required to file an annual statement from the Veterans Administration unless there is a change in the percentage of disability, the assessor’s office said.
If a married veteran had an income of $67,900 or less or a single veteran had an income of $60,200 or less in 2015, they may apply for additional veteran exemptions at the assessor’s office. The last day to file for these benefits is Oct. 1. Proof of income is required.
For more information or questions about the exemptions, contact the assessor’s office at (860)441-6660 or visit the assessor’s office in Groton Town Hall, 45 Fort Hill Road, between 8:30 a.m. and 4:30 p.m. Monday through Friday.
