Norwich Rotary to honor diversity award recipients Sept. 21

Norwich — Community health education nurse Alice Facente and the Norwich Arts Center will be honored by Norwich Rotary as recipients of the 2016 diversity awards at the annual Celebrate Cultural Diversity event Sept. 21 at Howard T. Brown Memorial Park.

The Celebrate Cultural Diversity event, which also features international foods, live music and cultural performances, will run from 5 to 8 p.m. Sept. 21 at Brown Park at Norwich Harbor.

Admission is $15 per person, $25 for a family of four. Children aged 12 and under will be admitted free.

Tickets are available at local Putnam Bank branches and Savings Institute Bank and Trust branches and from Norwich Rotary members.

Facente, community health education nurse at the William W. Backus Hospital, will receive the fourth annual Lottie B. Scott Diversity Award.

Facente has conducted educational and outreach programs in Norwich neighborhoods and adult education programs and promotes healthy multicultural food. She also created a multicultural health fair hosted by Backus Hospital annually until 2014.

Past award recipients were Lottie B. Scott, John Wong and Adam Bowles.

This year, Norwich Rotary established the Rotary Community Diversity Award to recognize an organization that promotes activities that bring together people of diverse cultures and help further cultural awareness and education.

The Norwich Arts Center, formed in 1987, sponsors the city's First Fridays arts and music celebrations and also hosts Miss Lottie's Cafe, a live jazz series that has honored early jazz stars.

First Friday Live Sounds features music from a variety of cultures such as Celtic, Latin, Eastern European Jewish music, Caribbean, American bluegrass and others. The Donald L. Oat Theater also has hosted plays, movies and other theatrical events featuring historical, ethnic or cultural themes.
