New London's Hodges Square gets state recognition

New London — The Hodges Square Historic District is now listed on the state Register of Historic Places, thanks to unanimous approval by the state Historic Preservation Review Board, the city announced Tuesday.

“This is a major milestone for the City and the residents and businesses of the Hodges Square village,” Mayor Michael Passero said in a statement. “We share this prestigious honor with the New London Historic Preservation Commission and New London Landmarks. They are the true stewards of our city’s early American history and traditions.”

The decision will be forwarded to the National Park Service for inclusion on the National Register of Historic Places.

As a member of the State and National Register of Historic Places, the Hodges Square Historic District is now eligible for historical markers from the state Historic Preservation Office, and may be considered in planning for federal, federally licensed and federally assisted projects.

In addition, the district now is eligible for federal and state tax incentives for historical rehabilitation, and qualifies for federal grants for historical preservation when funds are available.

The Hodges Square Historic District consists of a 65.8-acre neighborhood in the northeastern section of the city at the intersection of Williams, Cole and Rosemary streets.
