    Book club tackles aging

The Public Library of New London is debuting a new book club with a funny book on a difficult topic: aging parents.

During the first meeting at 7 p.m., Oct. 25, participants will discuss “Can’t We Talk About Something More Pleasant?” by cartoonist Roz Chast, who is best known for her work in the New Yorker. Chast’s illustrated memoir details her experience with her aging parents. Copies of the book are currently available at the library.

Suzanne Maryeski, executive director of library, said she first read the book when it came out in 2014.

“It’s a difficult topic, but it’s dealt with in a way that’s also humorous,” she said.

After success with the library’s “Supper Book Club,” which has been running since 2010, Maryeski wanted to start a book club that gave people a place to discuss aging and end-of-life issues. She said that even though the topic makes some people uneasy, it can be interesting to think about, and she has already found several books for future meetings.

The club will meet the last week of every month and feature people from the community who will talk about the month’s selection.

New London City Councilor and registered nurse Martha Marx is the guest this month, along with Carol Sanders, a social worker and chairperson for the Senior Commission in Waterford. Both work for the Visiting Nurse Association of Southeastern Connecticut.

“It’s fun to have facilitators,” Maryeski said, citing other library book clubs that have invited local experts to attend meetings. “It does give a different point of view.”

November’s selection is “On Being Mortal: Medicine and What Matters in the End” by Atul Gawande with facilitators Kristin Cooksley Magnussen and Catherine Dragoo, both from Ledge Light Health District. The meeting will be held Nov. 29. Copies of the book will be available starting Oct. 29.
