Ocean Community YMCA to announce fundraising for Mystic branch project

Mystic — The Ocean Community YMCA, which has obtained 85 donations — including seven gifts of more than $100,000 — during the silent phase of fundraising for the $7.2 million renovation and expansion of its Mystic branch, will discuss the status of its fundraising during a 5:30 p.m. Friday, Nov. 4, event at the Mystic branch.

YMCA Executive Director Maureen Fitzgerald said Thursday the total amount raised so far will be announced at the Nov. 4 event, which also will serve as the kickoff for the public phase of the fundraising. The event is open to the public, and there will be activities for children.

The Mystic project calls for a 12,500-square-foot addition, a renovation of the aging facility and additional parking. Upgrades include improved handicapped access, new locker rooms, including family and special needs locker rooms, and a new entrance area that will look out over the Mystic River.

The YMCA would remain open during the work, just as the Westerly-Pawcatuck branch did during its $8 million renovation project completed in 2013.

The YMCA has hired Carlin Construction of New London as the construction manager. Once works begins, it is estimated it would take about a year to complete.

The YMCA has operated the facility since 2003, when the former Mystic Community Center merged with the Westerly-Pawcatuck YMCA.
