Aquarium foundation to receive two grants for Long Island Sound projects

Mystic Aquarium’s Sea Research Foundation is among 10 recipients of federal Long Island Sound Futures Fund grants for community conservation projects focusing on coastal habitat restoration and improving water quality, the state’s congressional delegation announced Wednesday.

The grants, totaling $600,000, were awarded by the U.S. Environmental Protection Agency, the National Fish and Wildlife Foundation and the U.S. Fish & Wildlife Service. The grants were announced by Sens. Richard Blumenthal and Chris Murphy, along with Rep. Joe Courtney, D-2nd District, and Connecticut’s four other Congress members.

    The local grants are:

    • $9,300 to the Sea Research Foundation at the aquarium, with a grantee match of $11,895 for community engagement programs, including a Long Island Sound Day celebration. The family activities will take place at Barn Island Wildlife Management Area in Stonington and Bluff Point State Park in Groton.

    • $24,671 to the Sea Research Foundation, with a grantee match of $24,710, to monitor and identify local pollution sources, including nitrogen pollution, along the coast for a public education program in Stonington Harbor.

In addition, the University of Connecticut will receive a $34,997 grant, with a grantee match of $29,997, to create an online resource for the Sound’s watershed in Connecticut and New York. The resource will be used to develop a Blue Marine Plan to track ecological, economic and recreational activity along the Sound to better protect and restore it.
