New London school district accepting applications for new magnet school
New London – The Board of Education this week is expected to vote on an 80-page operational plan in anticipation of the newest planned magnet school in the district – C.B. Jennings Dual Language and International Elementary School.
The school is expected to open in the fall with kindergarten and first-grade students from outside the district and along with it an infusion of magnet school funds.
The school will offer “students and families exciting international experiences, global and cultural awareness and various language learning opportunities,” according to a press release from the school district. Applications are being accepted now through April 3. The school plans to merge its dual language program with the international and dual language education to provide classes in which students are taught in two languages.
The school is the K through 5 portion of what is to be a Dual Language and International Education Magnet Pathway that will continue into a 6-12 program as part of the district’s $165 million school construction project. The district’s four 6-12 magnet pathways will eventually be located on two campuses – the south campus at Bennie Dover Jackson Middle School and the north campus at New London High School.
The state legislature already has approved funding a $98 million north campus plan and the plan for the $55 million south campus was submitted in November and under review with the state Board of Education. The four pathways include the visual and performing arts, science, technology, engineering and mathematics (STEM), dual language and international education and leadership.
C.B. Jennings Dual Language is also seeking candidacy as an International Baccalaureate World School.
