East Lyme sewer line repaired after being damaged during bridge construction

East Lyme — A sewer line was repaired Thursday after a contractor nicked it while working on construction to the Route 1 bridge over the Pattagansett River, according to the town's first selectman.

The town's sewer department responded Thursday morning to assess the damage and determine a fix, First Selectman Mark Nickerson said.

The small break was patched up quickly, and workers permanently will fix the sewer line next, he said.

State Department of Energy and Environmental Protection spokesman Dennis Schain said the damage to the sewer line was reported to the department. He said no sewage was released in the ground.

The state Department of Transportation is conducting a project to rebuild the Route 1 bridge.
