New London Landmarks gives out awards

The Social Bar & Kitchen took home New London Landmarks’ Restoration Award earlier this month for its adaptive reuse of the old Solomon office supply store at 208 Bank St.

Brian Strazzo, owner of the downtown bar and eatery, accepted the award on behalf of all the people who worked on the project, including himself.

“You don’t think about winning awards when you’re running wires at 4 o’clock in the morning,” Strazzo joked at New London Landmarks’ annual meeting.

Other awards on the night went to Jon Day, a carpenter and owner of Day + Age, who was recognized with the Clifford Stone Award for historic preservation; and James Diaz-Saavedra, who won the Sally Ryan Volunteer Award.

Day has worked on a variety of local projects, including the Shaw Manson, home of the New London County Historical Society, as well as a historic house on Greenes Alley.

Diaz-Saavedra has done carpentry and building maintenance work around the city, including on the David Bishop House, Custom House and the Old Town Mill.

New London Landmarks officers for the coming year will be Laura Nadelberg, president; Tom Couser, vice president; Deborah Donovan, treasurer, and Kate Scanlon, secretary. Departing board member Christopher Deveau was recognized, as was new member Rose Oliveira, who works as a librarian at Connecticut College.
