NAACP welcomes Jefferson descendant to New London

New London — The New London NAACP, in conjunction with the United States Coast Guard Academy, will host a multipurpose educational event Wednesday to commemorate President’s Day, the history of African Americans and the contributions of women in American history.

Shannon Lanier, an actor, author, talk show host and descendant of President Thomas Jefferson and Sally Hemings, will share his life’s story, recounting his journey to prove that he is a linear descendant of Jefferson. Hemings was at one time a slave owned by Jefferson.

Lanier was scheduled to visit the city last month but the event was postponed due to inclement weather.

On Wednesday morning, Lanier will be greeted by approximately 200 eighth-grade students at the Science and Technology Magnet High School in New London. A book signing and complimentary copy of Lanier’s book “Jefferson’s Children” will be provided to each student.

At 6:30 p.m. Wednesday, the U.S. Coast Guard Academy will welcome Lanier in the Leamy Auditorium, opening with a performance by the USCGA’s Genesis Club. This portion of the event is free and open to the public. Visitors are required to present photo identification when entering the academy.

In addition to the NAACP and Coast Guard Academy, Lanier’s visit is sponsored by Connecticut College, Lawrence + Memorial Healthcare and Yale New Haven Health, the New London Public Schools and City Council members.
