Walk to end homelessness to take place April 23

New London — The 10th annual walk to end homelessness, organized by the Homeless Hospitality Center and Connecticut College, will take place on Sunday, April 23.

The walk will kick off at 1 p.m., starting from the municipal parking lot on Eugene O'Neill Drive in New London.

The 1.6-mile route winds through downtown New London and the nearby Hempstead Street neighborhood. It passes several of the city's community, cultural and historical landmarks, including the Little Pink House and Manwaring Hill, where patriots tried unsuccessfully to defend New London from Benedict Arnold's troops in 1781.

The lead sponsors are Mohegan Sun, the Waterford Group Charitable Foundation, Yale New Haven Heath/Lawrence + Memorial Hospital and St. Francis House. All proceeds will benefit the New London Homeless Hospitality Center.

Ben and Nancy Parent of the Rivergods will perform before the walk begins. Other performances include the Raging Grannies at the Hempsted Houses; Connecticut College's Vox Cameli a cappella group at the entrance to the All Souls parking lot on Jay Street, and spoken word poets Viri Villalva-Salas, Juan Garcia and Verdi Degbey of Connecticut College at the junction of Blinman and Bank streets.

Walkers will hear the stories of people who have been homeless, stop by the Homeless Hospitality Center's Vet House and meet historical interpreters at the Hempsted Houses who will be portraying activists from the city's earlier days.

Walkers will finish at the Parade Plaza with a drumming circle organized by Doc Frazier, free ice cream and the opportunity to express their thoughts about what they've seen and heard during the day. Profiles of the Homeless Hospitality Center's shelter guests, created by Connecticut College student Mei Reffsin, also will be displayed there.

The Homeless Hospitality Center, founded in 2006, provides hospitality and a bridge to permanent housing for adults experiencing homelessness in New London County. It will serve about 600 individuals from across the region this year.

More information, including registration, is available at www.nlhhc.org/walk. Walkers who raise the most support will win prizes from local businesses.
