The Groton-based Nutmeg Volunteer Ancient Junior Fife and Drum Corps is seeking new members from throughout the region.

The 69-year-old organization provides music, performance and historic educational opportunities for young people ages 9 to 18. No experience is necessary, and members will be taught how to play their instruments if they don’t already know.

“While they are learning they still can join the corps, learn to march carrying a flag in our color guard, and start in parades within the first few weeks,” said director Terrie Lamb in an email.

Members learn to play the fife, snare or bass drum and carry their musical message throughout New England and New York.

There are no dues, but members are expected to buy their instruments, with fifes costing $10 and drums $40.

To see what this music is all about, potential new members can attend a free fife and drum concert by The Bluff Point Quahog Diggers Band at 1 p.m. Saturday at the Groton Municipal Building.

Many of the band’s members are alumni of the Nutmeg Fife and Drum Corps, an older group of musicians whose director is Ellen “Cap” Corduan, a former resident of Groton and a product of Nutmeg and the Groton Public Schools.

The Memorial Day weekend concert at 295 Meridian St. will display information about the junior Nutmeg Fife and Drum Corps for prospective new members and their parents.

For more information, contact Lamb at nutmegfifedrum@aol.com, visit www.nutmegfifeanddrum.com or call 860-446-8626 in the evenings.
