Beagle Max is Norwich's top dog
Norwich — A beagle named Max is the city's top dog for the next year.
The 4-year-old tricolor beagle, owned by Christian and Diana Pimentel, won the city clerk's office's annual contest for the No. 1 dog license tag. Max and his owners also will receive a gift basket of grooming supplies, a leash, treats, cleaning supplies and toys, courtesy of Assistant City Clerk Roseanne Muscarella.
Christian Pimentel said he has wanted the No. 1 tag for years, but wouldn't be able to line up early on June 1 to get a top dog license number. When he heard about the contest, he gave it a try.
The Pimentels have owned Max since he was 10 months old and the dog still has separation anxiety. If he is left home alone for a long time, the couple return to a exuberant greeting worthy of YouTube — “every time!” Christian Pimentel said.
The No. 2 tag will go to Sookie, a 5-year-old miniature Dachshund, and the No. 3 tag was won by Molly Mae, a 10-year-old golden retriever.
The city clerk's office received 330 applicants, the highest so far in the 17-year contest to raise awareness that dog licenses must be renewed each year in June.
