DEEP announces measures to protect endangered bird species
Connecticut's Department of Energy and Environmental Protection announced Thursday that Charles Island in Milford and Duck Island in Westbrook will be closed to the public until Sept. 9.
The closure is a measure to prevent disturbing several state-listed birds who nest in these areas during the season. DEEP will be patrolling the islands to ensure the rules are being upheld in the marked-off areas.
In addition to the closures, DEEP also is asking beachcombers, sunbathers and boaters along the shoreline to respect the fencing and yellow signs warning of nesting areas.
"Each year, Charles and Duck islands are closed during the nesting season to protect various bird species," said Susan Whalen, DEEP deputy commissioner. "Fencing also is erected at beach nesting areas along Connecticut's shoreline to safeguard piping plovers and least terns. Closing the islands and enlisting the public's help and cooperation are simple but effective ways to protect these birds."
Educational signs have also been posted around the islands describing the endangered birds and why they should not be disturbed. Signs posted with island closure notices are marked, "Do Not Enter — Bird Nesting Area."
The entire island areas are closed and the landing of watercraft on the beaches is prohibited. Please call DEEP's 24-hour dispatch center at (860) 424-3333 if violations are observed.
