Fireworks return to Norwich Harbor June 30

Norwich – Fireworks will return to Norwich Harbor to celebrate the Fourth of July, but this year, the celebration will take place Friday, June 30, with a rain date of Sunday, July 2.

The committee that oversees the annual St. Patrick's Day Parade has taken on the fundraising and organizing tasks for the Fourth of July Fireworks Festival at the Howard T. Brown Memorial Park. The fireworks display is scheduled to start about 9 p.m., with food trucks and vendors starting at 3 p.m.

The fireworks festival was canceled last summer for lack of funding and volunteers.

The newly named Norwich Events Organization took over the planning of the fireworks this year. In order to raise funds for not only the fireworks festival but other downtown events such as the St. Patrick’s Parade and the spring egg hunt, the Norwich Events Organization is hosting a golf tournament and the Ron Aliano Service awards presentation, both on June 12.

The golf tournament will be held at the Norwich Golf Course with an 11 a.m. registration and a noon shotgun start. Sponsorships range from $200 to $10,000 and a foursome can register to play for $600. For information about sponsorship or registering a team, go to NorwichHarborFireworks.com.

The Ron Aliano Service Awards honor individuals and businesses that consistently support the city of Norwich. This year's awards will be presented to Ken Capano Sr., owner of local ShopRite stores, and The Byrnes Agency insurance agency. The awards presentation will be held following the golf tournament at the Norwich Marina at American Wharf under the banquet tent.

Tickets can be purchased for $25 and include dinner. Stephen R. Avdevich from Sounds in Motion is donating his time to bring music to the event, and dinner will be provided by Americus on the Wharf, the marina’s restaurant, with a cash bar. Tickets can be purchased online at NorwichHarborFireworks.com or at Billy Wilsons Ageing Still, Harp and Dragon Irish Pub, These Guys Brewing or Foundry 66, all in downtown Norwich.

Smaller donations to support the fireworks festival and other downtown Norwich events can be made online by visiting http://squ.re/2qhaGLT. Donations will be applied to the Norwich Harbor fireworks, the Norwich St. Patrick’s Day Parade and Festival and other downtown Norwich events. Anyone making a sponsorship at this time will be listed as a sponsor for the 2017 Norwich Harbor Fireworks and the 2018 Norwich St. Patrick’s Day Parade and Festival.

For more information about the Norwich Harbor fireworks, go to the organization's Facebook page: Facebook.com/NorwichCTFireworks or to NorwichHarborFireworks.com.
