Lymes Senior Center offering exercise class for cancer survivors

Old Lyme — The Lymes Senior Center is offering a Surviving-N-Moving Class from 3:30 to 4:30 p.m. on Tuesdays and Thursdays, beginning Tuesday.

Instructor Donna Scott is a certified personal trainer and cancer exercise training specialist. She has studied the exercise implications and contraindications for 25 types of cancer, surgery, reconstruction and treatments, breast reconstruction and contraindications to exercise, including about preventing and identifying swelling and cancer-related pain, mental and physical fatigue during cancer treatment, and conducting postural assessments and working with medical professionals as needed.

Based on her training, Scott has developed the Surviving-N-Moving class so that cancer survivors no longer have to accept the fact that they have to live with limited range of motion, poor posture, neck and back pain, swelling, chronic fatigue and many other symptoms following their surgery and treatment.

The simple group exercise program combines cardiovascular conditioning, strength training, balance, flexibility and relaxation techniques. The class includes: short centering meditation; low-impact movement; resistance and strength training with light weights or bands; flexibility and balance exercises; stretching; and cool down and relaxation techniques. The 11-week, twice-weekly program costs $110, with scholarships available.

The program is open to adults who have been treated for cancer and are in post-recovery phase. Participants must receive medical clearance from their doctor before beginning the program and complete health history and quality-of-life questionnaires. For more information or to sign up, call Scott at (860) 961-4507.
