No swimming just yet at Spaulding Pond in Norwich

Norwich — Norwich public schools finished for the summer on Tuesday, but families shouldn’t head to Spaulding Pond in Mohegan Park for swimming just yet.

Norwich Human Services Director Lee Ann Gomes, who is overseeing the city Recreation Department, said because the city budget was not finalized until June 12, and swimming at Spaulding Pond was one possible budget cut, there was a delay in hiring lifeguards.

Spaulding Pond needs five lifeguards and one supervisor. Gomes said the city is “actively recruiting” lifeguard applicants. Anyone interested should apply using the online application posted on the city’s website, www.norwichct.org. Applications are reviewed by the city Human Resources Department.

Gomes said an opening day for swimming at Spaulding Pond will be set when the full lifeguard staff is in place.
