Barrett-Jackson event at Mohegan Sun drives sales of more than $24 million
Mohegan — Barrett-Jackson’s 2nd Annual Northeast Auction generated $23.5 million in sales of collector cars last week at Mohegan Sun, the Scottsdale, Ariz.-based auction company announced Monday.
Some 630 vehicles — 96 percent of those up for sale — were sold in bidding Thursday, Friday and Saturday. In addition, 685 pieces of automobilia — automobile-related collectibles — sold for more than $819,000, bringing total sales for the four-day event that began Wednesday to more than $24.3 million. Last year, car and automobilia sales topped $26 million.
About 72,000 people attended the auction, according to Barrett-Jackson. The company's inaugural Northeast auction last year drew more than 90,000 people over three days, a Mohegan Sun Arena record for an event of that duration.
“We’re extremely grateful to our sponsors, consignors and bidders for helping make this year’s Northeast Auction another banner event,” Craig Jackson, chairman and CEO of Barrett-Jackson, said in a statement. “Several thrilling trends emerged, including a surge in participation by younger guests. On Friday, we experienced sheer excitement when a pair of young teenagers sold a Bandit Trans Am. We also saw the demand for trucks grow, along with top-tier custom vehicles that had been professionally restored or modified.”
The top-selling car was a red 2017 Ferrari 488 Spider, which sold for $434,500.
Other top sellers and their auction prices included a 1969 Ford Mustang Boss 429 Fastback, $407,000; a 1958 Dual-Ghia Convertible, $269,500; a 1967 Chevrolet Corvette 427/435, $231,000; a 1966 Shelby GT350-H Fastback, $220,000; and a 1959 Dodge Custom Royal Super D-500 Convertible, $220,000.
The top automobilia seller was a mid-1950s Polly Oil restored service station fuel island with two original gas pumps, which sold for $24,725.
During last week's auction, Barrett-Jackson passed the $94 million mark in funds raised for charity at its events.
Barrett-Jackson’s next event, its 10th Annual Las Vegas Auction, will be held Oct. 19-21 at the Mandalay Bay Resort & Casino.
