Boy Scout Troop 36 honored the Waterford VFW Post 382 for its continued support of youth programs and recognized the contributions of a longtime Boy Scout leader at a ceremony on June 10 at the VFW Hall.

The post frequently provides facilities and support for Eagle Scout project fundraisers, yard sales and Courts of Honor, and members often serve as mentors for the scouts. The troop awarded a plaque to VFW Commander Michael Lally.

The troop also honored Robert Godfrey, who has been heavily involved in Boy Scouting since the 1960s and has helped nearly 40 scouts become Eagle Scouts. Godfrey remained active in scouting activities — including hikes up Mount Washington in New Hampshire with groups of more than a dozen teenagers — for more than 50 years. He was the owner of Godfrey Business Machines in New London, and continued to dedicate his time to Boy Scout Troop 36 well into his 80s, his daughter, Cathleen Monfred, said.

Troop Committee Chairman Gary Silva and Charter Organization President George Ballassi presented Godfrey with a plaque honoring his service in front of an audience of about 70 people.

“With over 50 years of service to Boy Scouting, Godfrey has not lost his enthusiasm for working with young people and teach the scouting skills that have proven to be so useful to the Scouts in their lifetime pursuits,” Ballassi said in an email.

Godfrey has also been active in other charitable organizations including Lions Club, Kiwanis Club, The Benevolent and Protective Order of Elks and the Veterans of Foreign Wars.

Waterford Selectman Robert Brule issued a proclamation at the ceremony naming June 10 Robert Godfrey Day in the town for his work.
