Republican Martin Olsen announces run for NL City Council

New London — Republican Martin Olsen, a four-term former City Council member, has announced another run for a seat on the City Council.

The former owner of a local contracting company and adjunct professor of economics and business said he has “unfinished business” and has called for political diversity on the Democrat-controlled council.

Olsen’s experience on the council started in 1987, during a consecutive two-term run that saw him appointed to the position as deputy mayor in 1989. He also served on the council from 2009 to 20011, followed by an unsuccessful run at the position of elected mayor. He served on the council again from 2013 to 2015 and was narrowly defeated in 2015 — by three votes — by Democrat Efrain Dominguez.

Olsen now serves as a member of the Water and Water Pollution Control Authority and as an alternate member of the Planning and Zoning Commission. He is a board member at New London Landmarks and a longtime active member and past president of the Kiwanis Club of New London.

Olsen graduated from Mitchell College in 1993 with an associate degree in business administration and went on to earn a bachelor’s degree in economics from Connecticut College and a master of business administration degree from Rensselaer Polytechnic Institute. He has served as an adjunct professor of economics and business at Post University, the former Briarwood College and Mitchell College.

Olsen said the city’s budget is a pressing concern and thinks his background in business and education fits well “in terms of trying to walk that tightrope.”

Olsen said he was disappointed in the recent actions of the City Council in not immediately taking action in reaction to a petition calling for a drop in spending or a citywide vote on the budget.

“Ignoring the petition is bad business. We need to go to a vote as soon as possible,” Olsen said.
