New year sees hike in minimum wage for various states
With the new year, 19 states saw an increase in their minimum wages. The federal minimum wage is $7.25, while 5 states (Tennessee, South Carolina, Louisiana, Mississippi and Alabama) do not have minimum wage laws.
In the Northeast, Massachusetts leads the way with a minimum wage of $11 – only D.C. has a higher wage in the nation – while Connecticut saw an increase of 50 cents to bring the minimum wage to $10.10.
In addition, D.C., Maryland and Oregon are scheduled to raise their respective minimum wages on July 1, 2017 due to previously enacted legislation.
