Noank-based nonprofit gives away $85,000 in equipment to 16 vet businesses

Noank — In the first three months of 2017, Work Vessels for Vets Inc. donated $85,000 in equipment to veterans across the nation.

The equipment, which was sent  to 16 veteran enterprises in 11 states, ranged from adaptive sheep handling gates to a high-tech precious metal jewelry welder.

The largest single donation was a $45,000 John Deere tractor adapted to suit a young Georgia veteran who lost both legs in IED explosions. This unusual donation will be dedicated in June and was made possible by an anonymous donor who underwrote most of the cost.

Work Vessels for Vets donated several laptops to veterans with 100 percent service connected disability ratings. Each laptop was refurbished at no cost by Lou's Computers of Mystic.

Since 2008, the nonprofit has equipped more than 1,600 returning veterans in 48 states with tools for self-employment, valued at more than $1.6 million. The group achieved the coveted 2016 Top Rated Non Profit from Great NonProfits and also earned the highest Platinum Guide Star rating for transparency, integrity and efficient us of donor funds.
