VIDEO: Old Lyme singer makes it onto 'The Voice'

Braiden Sunshine, a 15-year-old singer from Old Lyme, became a member of Team Gwen on Monday’s episode of “The Voice.”

Gwen Stefani and Pharrell Williams both turned their chairs for Sunshine during the blind auditions just as he was ending his song. After hearing each of the judges’ pitches to be on their team, Sunshine went with Stefani.

Stefani praised the tone of Sunshine’s voice. She said that she has been in a band since she was 17 and, as a mother of three sons, she knows how to fight for someone she cares about. She said she wanted to find out who Sunshine wants to be.

Sunshine said that he had expected he’d choose Williams as his coach but that Stefani’s arguments won him over.

Sunshine has been performing for years. He has been part of several bands — Stone Creek, Madison Red, and Silver Hammer — and has performed at local venues ranging from the Hamburg Fair to the Old Roadhouse in New London to the Old Lyme Country Club to the Preston Music Festival. He has been a junior cabaret fellow at the Eugene O’Neill Theater Center in Waterford; he’s acted in the Lyme-Old Lyme High School production of “Carousel”; and he has performed on The Day’s Live Lunch Break series.
