DVD tip: "Sully" good, solid entertainment

    Sully

    DVD tip

    Sully

As a director, Clint Eastwood is a meat-and-potatoes filmmaker — no fancy jump cuts or woozy camera movements meant to attract attention to themselves. What this kind of approach does is put the focus firmly on the storytelling, and it's what makes so many of Eastwood's films effective. "Sully" deals with the aftermath of Capt. Chesley "Sully" Sullenberger's landing a plane on the Hudson River after a bird strike. National Transportation Safety board officials question whether Sully needed to land there or could have made it to a nearby airport. Tom Hanks is, no surprise, a beacon of gravitas and humanity as Sully. And the recreation of the plane skidding onto the Hudson is stunning. If it's not Oscar-worthy, "Sully" is at least good, solid entertainment.
