Acadia National Park, Maine — Officials at Acadia National Park are urging hikers and climbers to be careful this holiday weekend after three people were injured in separate incidents within a three-hour window at the park on Friday.

A 32-year-old-man from Chelmsford, Massachusetts, sustained non-life threatening injuries after he fell about 60 feet from the rock climbing area of Otter Cliffs to the ledges below on Friday morning, park officials said. The man, who was with a private climbing group, was transferred onto a U.S. Coast Guard boat and eventually taken by Life Flight to Eastern Maine Medical Center.

Shortly after that emergency call, rescuers were notified of an injured 60-year-old hiker off the Shore Path. Park officials, with the help of Mount Desert Island Search and Rescue, carried the Avon, Connecticut resident off the trail and he was taken to Mount Desert Island Hospital for treatment of a lower leg injury, the park said.

In another incident, officials say an 18-month-old boy from Scarborough was injured when he fell on Acadia Mountain. The boy was evaluated by rescue personnel and taken to Mount Desert Island Hospital as a precaution.

Park officials say all hikers and climbers should know the basics of first aid because rescue personnel may not immediately be available if they're responding to other incidents over this busy holiday weekend.
