Police: Man's arm amputated in SUV rollover crash

Tiverton, R.I. — Police say a 50-year-old man suffered serious injuries when an SUV he was driving rolled over in Rhode Island near the Massachusetts line.

Tiverton police Capt. Patrick Jones tells the Providence Journal the man was trapped inside a 1999 Chevrolet Tahoe on Route 177 in Tiverton Saturday evening and one of his arms was amputated below the elbow.

Jones says rescue crews recovered the arm and airlifted him to Rhode Island Hospital. Two others were also in the vehicle and were taken to Charlton Memorial Hospital in Fall River.

Jones says responders cleaned up gasoline, antifreeze, and oil that had been leaking from the SUV. He says they did not reach a nearby pond used as a drinking-water source in the area.
