Thousands without power after thunderstorms in southern New England
PROVIDENCE — Portions of southern New England are cleaning up after a line of powerful thunderstorms moved through the area, toppling trees and knocking out power to more than 120,000 electric customers in Rhode Island alone.
No serious injuries were immediately reported from the storms on Tuesday morning.
Isolated wind gusts of more than 60 mph were reported along with severe lightning before the front moved offshore. Rhode Island, southeastern Massachusetts and Cape Cod were hardest hit by the storms.
At 10 a.m. National Grid was reporting more than 120,000 outages in Rhode Island, the majority in Providence and Kent Counties, and nearly 13,000 in Massachusetts. Eversource reported 12,800 customers without power in eastern Massachusetts.
The Providence Journal said police in Cranston and Warwick were reporting dozens of streets blocked by downed trees and flooding.
