Woman charged with stealing $25,000 gaming chip from Mohegan Sun patron

A 41-year-old nurse from Rockville Centre, N.Y., appeared in New London Superior Court Monday on charges that she stole a $25,000 gaming chip from a California business owner at Mohegan Sun.

Moira Canty, who had posted a $25,000 bond following her Feb. 1 arrest, pleaded not guilty to a charge of first-degree larceny during her brief appearance before Judge Hillary B. Strackbein.

According to her court file, Canty was arrested by Mohegan Tribal Police when she attempted to cash out a $25,000 chip that she had allegedly stolen from Poway, Calif., business owner Joseph Horiuchi during a party at the casino's hotel. She has retained the Bridgeport law firm of Frank J. Riccio and is due back in court on May 1.

Senior Assistant State's Attorney Stephen M. Carney is prosecuting the case.
