Suspect arrested in 2006 Mystic bank robbery

Groton — Groton Town Police have arrested a suspect in the Oct. 2, 2006, unarmed robbery of the Chelsea Groton Bank at 2 Water St. in Mystic, according to Lt. John Varone.

John F. Robinson III, 47, of 123 Wannamoissett Road, East Providence, R.I., was charged Wednesday with second-degree robbery and third-degree larceny.

Robinson has been imprisoned at Otisville Correctional Department for a bank robbery in Rhode Island, according to Varone. Varone said police suspected Robinson was responsible for the robbery at Chelsea Groton within days of the incident.

Robinson has waived extradition and was taken into custody by Groton Town Police on Wednesday, according to Varone. The suspect spent the night at the police station in lieu of $100,000 bond and was arraigned at New London Superior Court on Thursday, Varone said.

Robinson will be returned to Otisville to complete his sentence for the Rhode Island robbery after facing his charges in Connecticut, according to Varone. Should Robinson be found guilty in the 2006 robbery, he will be returned to Connecticut to serve time upon release from Otisville.
