Red Crosss, Town of Groton to install free smoke alarms

Groton — The American Red Cross Connecticut Chapter and members of the Town of Groton Emergency Department are teaming up to visit residents on Saturday to install free smoke alarms and share fire safety information.

The effort is part of the Red Cross’ Home Fire Preparedness Campaign to reduce the number of deaths and injuries due to fire.

“We are excited to be offering these visits,” said Sue Rochester Bolen, senior director of emergency services with the Connecticut Chapter. “They are simple to schedule, take only about 20 minutes and could possibly prevent a tragedy.”

Bolen said volunteers canvassed in Groton last weekend, going door to door to set up appointments and leaving informational materials behind if residents were not at home.

Residents can schedule a visit by contacting the Town of Groton Office of Emergency Management by email at reverse911@groton-ct.gov or calling the Red Cross at (860) 447-3249, ext. 15.
