Six Groton businesses cited for selling tobacco to minor
Groton — Town police on Tuesday cited six local businesses for selling tobacco products to an underage buyer during unannounced compliance inspections.
Under the supervision of investigators, an underage youth employed by the Department of Mental Health and Addiction Services Tobacco Prevention and Enforcement Program entered 15 different establishments in an attempt to buy cigarettes or other tobacco products. It is against the law to sell tobacco products to anyone under the age of 18.
Clerks from six stores were issued infractions and fines of $200 for selling tobacco to a minor. The cigarette dealer license holder from the businesses found in violation will be referred to the Department of Revenue Services for possible sanctions, police said.
Groton businesses found in violation were: Veterans Convenience Store, 528 Gold Star Highway; Henny Penny Shell, 294 Route 12; Mini Mart Food Store, 944 Route 12; Henny Penny Shell, 639 Route 12; Groton Liquors, 591 Route 12; and Shell Food Mart, 820 Poquonnock Road.
Businesses found to be compliant: Henny Penny, 106 Fort Hill Road; Cory’s Petroleum Company, 208 Route 12; Groton Hess 065, 328 Route 12; Sam’s Food Mart, 551 Route 12; Family Dollar 5293, 756 Long Hill Road; ABBas Cigar Shop, 985 Poquonnock Road; Midway Mini Mart, 33 Fort Hill Road; Henny Penny, 106 Fort Hill Road; and Sunoco, 731 Long Hill Road.
