One dead, four injured in Montville crash

Editors note: This version corrects the spelling of the driver's name.

Montville — A Norwich man was killed and four other people injured early this morning after the car they were riding in flipped over at the intersection of the Exit 79A ramp of Interstate 395 and Route 2A, according to state police.

Pronounced dead at the scene of the 2:21 a.m. crash was Jamar Davis, 28, of 38 Fountain St. The driver of the 2004 Hyundai Sonata, Andre Roy Nicholas, 25, of 234 Broad St., Apt. B, Norwich, fled the scene but was later located at home by police. Nicholas, who was not injured, was charged with evading responsibility. He is being held on a $150,000 cash bond and is slated to appear in Norwich Superior Court Monday.

Four passengers were transported to The William W. Backus Hospital for treatment of their injuries. Nakeema Williams, 27, of 234 Broad St., Norwich, who police listed as the owner of the car, was sitting in the front passenger seat and suffered minor injuries.

Davis was one of four people in the rear seat, which is designed for three passengers. None were wearing seat belts.

Sheganha Nicasia, 25, whose address was not provided by state police, suffered serious injuries as did Keasia Y. Elliott, 21, of 38 Laurel Road, second floor, Norwich. Stephen M. Allen, 28, 110 Central Ave., Norwich, sustained minor injuries.

State police said that the car was traveling north on Interstate 395 and entered the Exit 79A off ramp to Route 2A eastbound. Nichols then lost control as he tried to merge onto Route 2A eastbound. The car traveled across the two travel lanes of Route 2A before striking the guardrail in the center median. The car went over the guardrail and rolled over, coming to rest on its roof facing east in the travel lane of the Exit 79A on-ramp for I-395 southbound from Route 2A westbound.

State police are investigating. Anyone with information or who may have witnessed the crash is asked to contact Trooper Lloyd Wright at Troop E in Montville at (860) 848-6500.
