Groton — A man whose disappearance while swimming with his wife off Noank led to a search by multiple agencies on Friday — and ultimately the discovery that the man was safe.

A woman called police to report her husband missing several hours after the two had taken a swim off the town dock in Noank.

Noank Fire Chief David Steel said it turned out the man swam to Ram Island, about a half a mile from the shore, apparently without his wife's knowledge.  

Groton Town Police, the Mystic Fire Department and U.S. Coast Guard all sent out boats to perform a search in the area.

Others were on their way when a civilian boater brought the man back to shore. He was unhurt.
