Old Saybrook — Multiple fire departments are on the scene of a fire Saturday that caused heavy damage to a large wood-frame home attached to the Grouse Perch Gun Store at 15 North Main Street.
Deputy Fire Chief Joe Johnson of the Old Saybrook Fire Department said the fire, which started in the rear of the home, spread across the attic into the business, but was contained.
For a period of time, there was concern that ammunition in the gun store would ignite, he said. Nobody was in the building at the time, and no injuries are reported.
The owner of the building, Tom Davis, was on scene, but not available to speak to the media. Police Chief Michael Spera said the gun store has been closed for a few months but there is still inventory on site.
The fire was reported at 4:10 p.m. by occupants of a nearby building, according to the fire chief. As it burned, multiple fire departments were called to assist, including Old Lyme, Guilford, Essex and Westbrook.
The fire was contained about an hour later, according to the fire chief.
The fire marshals' offices from Old Lyme and Old Saybrook are investigating the cause and origin of the blaze.
