Waterford — Officials from the state Department of Energy and Environmental Protection and area fire departments contained a hazardous material spill at the weigh station on Interstate 95 south.
Cyndy Chanaca, DEEP spokeswoman, said a plastic tote, encased in a wire cage, fell out of the back of a truck at the weigh station.
She said about one gallon of sodium hydroxide, a caustic material similar to Drano, spilled onto the pavement.
She said about 250 gallons was in the process of being pumped out of the tote.
A private environmental cleaning crew was hired to clean up the spill, she said.
