Plainville man charged in multi-town police chase

Montville — A Plainville man was arrested this morning after state police said he intentionally struck numerous vehicles, led police on a chase and attempted to strike a trooper's vehicle.

John Bielawski, 63, was charged with two counts of second-degree reckless endangerment, third-degree assault, second-degree threatening, first-degree criminal mischief, breach of peace, two counts of evading responsibility, three counts of reckless driving, engaging police in pursuit, three counts of criminal attempt to commit assault on a police officer, weapons in a motor vehicle and first-degree reckless endangerment.

State and Montville police received a report early Tuesday morning that New London police were looking for a silver van driven by a person who had led them in a police pursuit.

About 12:48 a.m. Tuesday, Troop E dispatch received a 911 call reporting an evading car accident. Police said the evading vehicle was described as a silver Chevrolet Express van.

Police said the driver of the van intentionally struck one car numerous times and then intentionally struck a second car. The driver of the second car was injured in the accident.

The van was seen traveling on Route 32 to Route 2A, where the van attempted to run another car off the road.

A trooper in a police cruiser attempted to stop the car, but the driver continued to flee and attempted to strike the police cruiser numerous times.

Troopers had to deploy "Stop Sticks" to deflate the van's tires. The van eventually was brought to a stop, but Bielawski refused to get out of the car. Police said he reached for a large knife.

Police said they were forced to deploy a state police K-9 to stop Bielawski.

One trooper was injured during the arrest. Police said no state property was damaged.

New London police have not yet lodged any charges against Bielawski.

Bielawski is being held on a $50,000 bond, pending his arraignment Thursday in Norwich Superior Court.
