New London — A former city woman faces a series of felony charges related to a 2012 assault and robbery.

Police charged Denise "Neece" Hughes, 49, of Greeneville, N.C., on Thursday with first-degree robbery, home invasion, second-degree assault, sixth-degree larceny, second-degree failure to appear in court and two counts of violation of probation.

The charges relate to the Sept. 26, 2012, ambush of man at 27 W. Coit St.

The victim claims he was performing renovation work at the multi-family dwelling when he was attacked by a man and woman.

He said he was punched, struck by a pillow case containing a hard object and a 2-by-4 piece of lumber. The assailants made off with $200.

Mercer and his girlfriend, Hughes, were identified as the suspects at the time.

Mercer, who initially was detained at the Pitt County Detention Center in Greeneville, N.C., was held on a $120,000 bond.
