New London — The Red Cross is helping four families — five children and five adults — after a house fire at 61-63 Summer St. on Saturday night. The agency provided assistance to meet the families' immediate needs including comfort kits containing personal care items such as toothbrushes and deodorant.

Four responders from the agency went to the scene Saturday where some 30 firefighters and multiple fire departments were engaged in fighting the fire, which was on the second story of the house.

The resident of the second-story apartment was not home at the time of the fire, according to New London Fire Department Battalion Chief Edward Sargent.

No one was injured, but the tenant's dog, which was in the apartment, died in the fire, officials said.

The cause of the fire is unknown and remains under investigation.
