Couple arrested and charged with plotting Jewett City home invasion

Griswold — A Jewett City woman with a history of drug abuse and her boyfriend were arrested this week and charged with plotting a home invasion at a Mechanic Street residence last month to retrieve her prescribed Oxycodone and OxyContin medications.

Rita Allard, 45, of 9 Mechanic St. and Robert Gumlaw, 38, of 36 Soule St., were each charged with conspiracy to commit home invasion, conspiracy to commit second-degree larceny and conspiracy to commit first-degree robbery.

Gumlaw also was charged with first-degree false statement.

The pair were arrested Monday after a month-long investigation into a home invasion that occurred at a Mechanic Street residence on Sept. 28.

Police said they were dispatched to the residence shortly after 9:30 p.m.

The male victim told police that a black male pointed a gun at his face and robbed him of $250, his cellphone and two full bottles of Allard's prescribed narcotics.

The victim told police that Allard was his sister-in-law, the arrest warrant said.

A second victim in the home told police that she was in the kitchen when she saw a black male walk out of the residence through a rear door. Shortly thereafter the first victim came out of his bedroom and told her that he had just been robbed.

The first victim told police that earlier that day he had posted bond for Allard, who was being held at the York Correctional Institution for a recent arrest.

He then said he drove her to the Rite Aid pharmacy in Jewett City so that she could refill her Oxycodone and OxyContin medications before heading back to his house.

The victim said that Allard has a history of heroin and crack cocaine abuse so he keeps her medication to prevent her from abusing it, the warrant said.

The victim told police that he suspected that Allard was somehow involved with the robbery because she was home just prior to the robbery and he was unable to get in contact with her after the incident happened.

Two days after the robbery, police said Allard had called Troop E in Montville and wanted to speak to someone about the home invasion.

During the interview, Allard told police she is addicted to heroin and crack cocaine and is prescribed OxyContin and Oxycodone for a torn rotator cuff.

She told police that she is prescribed 180 Oxycodone pills and 60 OxyContin pills each month.

She alleged that the victim, her brother-in-law, sold her medicine and only gave her a few pills each month, telling her to "make them last," the arrest warrant said.

She said she got angry while in jail because she knew the victim was selling her medication and that the only reason he bonded her out was to refill her medication.

Allard told police that she asked Gumlaw to help her find someone to rob the victim so she could get her medication back. Gumlaw told her that he couldn't find anyone.

Allard then told him to contact her drug dealer, a man known as Ice, to see if he would be willing to rob her brother-in-law.

According to the arrest warrant, Ice, who is not identified, agreed to the robbery.

Allard said when Ice entered the residence, she left the house. She met up with Gumlaw and walked to a car that was being driven by Ice's unidentified girlfriend.

A few minutes later, Ice returned to the car and they drove off to a nearby gas station. She told police that Ice gave her 25 pills from the Oxycodone bottle and the full bottle of OxyContin.

She said she and Gumlaw stayed at a house in Jewett City while Ice and his girlfriend drove off.

Police attempted to interview Gumlaw on numerous occasions, but he would never show up for his interview. He told police over the phone that he was not involved in the robbery.

Police went to Gumlaw's home last Wednesday and he agreed to go to the Troop E barracks for an interview. During the interview, he again told police that he was not involved in the robbery and that he was getting high at a Jewett City home during the robbery.

He said Allard stopped by the house and told him that if she could get a ride to Norwich, she would be able to buy more drugs. When she got back from Norwich, she shared her drugs with everyone that was in the house, the arrest warrant said.

Gumlaw told police that he did not consider Allard to be his girlfriend and that she prostituted herself to support their drug addiction.

Police were able to get a warrant to retrieve Allard's and Gumlaw's cellphone records. Police said text message records showed that Allard and Gumlaw orchestrated the home invasion.

Both Allard and Gumlaw are being held on bond.

    The incident remains under investigation.
