    Old Saybrook man appears in court for allegedly robbing Subway restaurant

    Old Saybrook — An Old Saybrook man was arraigned Friday in Middlesex Superior Court on charges that Thursday he attempted to rob the Subway restaurant on Boston Post Road.

    Thomas Einsmann, 25, of 287 Boston Post Road was charged with criminal attempt to commit first-degree robbery, criminal attempt to commit fifth-degree larceny, second-degree breach of peace, carrying a dangerous weapon and possession of drug paraphernalia.

    He is being held on a $100,000 bond.

    The robbery was reported at 4:14 p.m. Old Saybrook Police Lt. Kevin Roche said officers quickly surrounded the area and Einsmann was caught at 4:32 p.m. at the nearby Amtrak train station.

    Roche said he attempted to rob the restaurant by displaying a weapon. When an employee didn't immediately cooperate, Einsmann fled the restaurant.

    A second employee attempted to follow the suspect but lost track of him. 

    The employee alerted a nearby Old Saybrook police officer that a robbery had just taken place.
