Groton police ID man who died in October car-versus-tree accident

Groton — Town police on Thursday night identified the man who died when his BMW Z3 collided with a tree just after 10 p.m. on Oct. 29.

The man, whom police said was Noel Varrall, 35, of Groton, was pronounced dead at the scene.

He was the only person in the vehicle, according to police.

Police said it appears that Varrall was driving his BMW Z3 westbound on New London Road, just west of Ocean View Avenue in the Mystic section of town, when it left the travel portion of the roadway and struck the tree.

Police said they still are investigating the cause of the accident and are waiting for a report from the state Office of the Chief Medical Examiner.

According to Varrall's Facebook page, he moved to the Mystic section of Groton in April of 2014.

According to Kent Online, a United Kingdom-based regional news network, Varrall is from Deal, a town in Kent, England.

The outlet reported that Varrall's funeral and burial occurred in Deal and that he left behind, in addition to other family members, a wife and two children.
