New London police union to host 11th annual food drive

New London — Members of New London Police Union Local 724 will be at ShopRite on Saturday for their 11th annual holiday food drive to benefit the Gemma E. Moran United Way/Labor Food Center.

Set up in the parking lot of the North Frontage Road grocery store, they'll accept donations of non-perishable goods, turkeys and cash from 10 a.m. to 5 p.m.

Police union members said they also plan to use an unspecified amount of money the Texas Roadhouse on South Frontage Road donated to purchase grocery gift cards for families in need.

Last year, the drive raised $1,261 in cash and saw 84 turkeys and 2,770 pounds of food donated, according to union President Todd Lynch, who added that he hopes this year's event will exceed those numbers.

"This event gives our members a chance to make a positive difference in the community we serve," Lynch said in a news release.
