Hash oil lab possible source of Westerly fire
WESTERLY (AP) — Local and federal authorities are trying to determine if a hash oil lab was the source of a fire and reported explosion at a condominium building in Westerly.
Residents at the Morningside Condominiums reported hearing an explosion about 4 a.m. Friday. Officials say a fire damaged a building containing four condos and displaced about eight residents.
No serious injuries were reported. A firefighter was taken to a hospital for observation as a precaution.
Westerly authorities and the federal Drug Enforcement Administration are investigating.
Investigators say it appears there was a butane hash oil lab in one of the condos damaged in the fire. Butane hash oil is a smokable resin derived from marijuana and made using butane. Authorities found marijuana plants and butane in the condo.
